We enjoyed a relaxing time soaking up the sunshine, local food and drink, and taking short day trips to visit nearby sites. One of our trips was to the ancient hill-town known as <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Motovun\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Motovun<\/a> in Croatian and Montona in Istrian Italian (most towns and villages in Istria are in both languages due to Istria&#8217;s complex history).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"http:\/\/52.146.8.25\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/street.jpg\" alt=\"Motovun Street\" class=\"wp-image-657\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scott.mortimer.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/street.jpg 600w, https:\/\/scott.mortimer.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/street-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/scott.mortimer.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/street-525x700.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After driving up the steep and narrow road to the public parking, we started to explore the town by foot and it instantly reminded me of certain hill-towns in Tuscany and Umbria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"http:\/\/52.146.8.25\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/arch-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scott.mortimer.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/arch-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/scott.mortimer.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/arch-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/scott.mortimer.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/arch-1-525x700.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The town of Motovun dates back to the ancient Celts and Illyrians and there are inscriptions and engravings in the town dating back to the 1st Century Roman period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"http:\/\/52.146.8.25\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tower.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-658\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scott.mortimer.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tower.jpg 600w, https:\/\/scott.mortimer.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tower-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/scott.mortimer.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/tower-525x700.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The medieval town that you can walk around in today is fairly well preserved and not overly &#8220;touristy&#8221;. The ticket to walk along the outer walls and fortifications is worth it if only for the views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" src=\"http:\/\/52.146.8.25\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/view-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-671\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scott.mortimer.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/view-1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/scott.mortimer.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/view-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/scott.mortimer.name\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/view-1-525x700.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Motovun\/Montona is a lovely gem set in the crown of Istrian heritage and is certainly worth the time for a visit. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We recently made a short Summer trip to the lovely Croatian peninsula of Istria.
